    Old Newgate Prison

    East GranbyUnited States1773–1827

Located in East Granby, Connecticut, Old Newgate Prison is a harrowing 18th-century penal site built directly atop America's first chartered copper mine. Established in 1773, it served as Connecticut's primary colonial jail and later as a brutal Revolutionary War prisoner-of-war camp where Tory Loyalists were housed in damp, pitch-black subterranean caverns. Renowned as one of the most oppressive penal facilities in American history, its crumbling stone ruins and underground mine shafts are active hotspots for ghostly sightings, phantom screams, and sudden drops in temperature.
