    Apollonia Archaeological Park

    PojaniAlbania588 BCE–14th century

Founded in 588 BCE by Greek colonists from Corinth and Corcyra, Apollonia was a thriving ancient city and center of learning where young Julius Caesar and Augustus studied. Today, its grand classical ruins and medieval Monastery of Saint Mary are associated with haunting legends of ancient philosopher ghosts, phantom chanting in Byzantine crypts, and eerie shadow figures among classical columns.

Built in the 2nd century CE under Roman Emperor Trajan, the Durrës Amphitheatre is the largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkan Peninsula, once holding 20,000 spectators for brutal gladiatorial combats.
