Tamgaly-Tas (Sacred Rocks on the Ili River)
Tamgaly-Tas, meaning 'Written Stones' or 'Stones with Signatures' in Kazakh, is an extraordinary open-air sanctuary and archaeological monument located on the steep red rock cliffs along the Ili River, 120 kilometers north of Almaty. Renowned for its stunning late 17th-century Tibetan Buddhist rock carvings depicting the Buddha Shakyamuni, Avalokiteshvara, and Manjushri alongside ancient Dzungar runic inscriptions, Tamgaly-Tas is a place of immense spiritual reverence and folklore. Steeped in centuries of Kazakh and Oirat legends, visitors report experiencing profound auditory anomalies, feeling unexplainable warm energy radiating from the sacred rock faces, and seeing mysterious optical flashes along the river at dusk.
