Turaida Castle
Turaida Castle, situated atop a scenic cliff overlooking the Gauja River valley near Sigulda, was constructed in 1214 by order of Albert, Bishop of Riga. Constructed from red brick in the Gothic style, it served for centuries as a vital stronghold for the Archbishopric of Riga. Beyond its impressive medieval architecture, the castle and surrounding museum reserve are world-famous for the tragic romantic legend of Maija, the Rose of Turaida. Visitors to the castle tower, surrounding parkland, and historic churchyard frequently report encounters with a pale female apparition, mysterious whispering winds, and emotional cold spots.
