Fremantle Arts Centre
The Fremantle Arts Centre, located in Fremantle, Western Australia, is housed in a striking 1860s Gothic Revival limestone complex originally built by convict labor as the Fremantle Lunatic Asylum. Over more than 160 years, the imposing building has served as a psychiatric hospital, poor house for elderly women, wartime US Navy submarine depot, and technical school before transforming into a vibrant public arts organization. Renowned as one of Western Australia's most haunted buildings, it is famous for reported spectral apparitions, cold spots, mysterious scents, and disembodied voices echoing through former asylum wards.
