    Bridge of No Return

    KaesongDemocratic People's Republic of Korea1953

Spanning the narrow Sachon River in the Demilitarized Zone near Panmunjom, the Bridge of No Return is one of the most chilling historical symbols of the Korean War. Used for major prisoner-of-war exchanges following the 1953 armistice, the bridge derived its ominous name from the ultimatum given to repatriated captives: once they crossed the Military Demarcation Line into North or South Korea, they could never turn back. The surrounding ground was also the site of the violent 1976 Axe Murder Incident, in which two U.S. Army officers were killed during a tree-trimming standoff. Surrounded by minefields, razor wire, and heavily armed watchtowers, guard sentries on both sides have long reported harrowing ghostly encounters, phantom footsteps along the riverbanks, sudden temperature drops, and spectral figures in vintage military uniforms wandering through the nocturnal mist.
