    Pohyon Temple

    Nestled deep in the lush, pine-scented valleys of sacred Mount Myohyang ('Mysterious Fragrant Mountain') in Hyangsan County, Pohyon Temple (Pohyonsa) is one of the most famous and ancient Buddhist temple complexes in North Korea. Founded in 1042 CE during the Koryo Dynasty by Master Tamjin, the monastery grew into the paramount spiritual center of northern Korean Buddhism, encompassing over 24 distinct shrine halls and pagodas. Historically renowned as the stronghold of Great Master Sosan (Hyujung), who organized 5,000 warrior-monks (*S 승병*) to defend Korea against the Japanese Imjin invasions in 1592, the temple was heavily damaged by U.S. aerial bombings during the Korean War but meticulously restored as National Treasure #40. Shrouded in mountain mist and Buddhist lore, visitors and caretakers report disembodied chanting around the 13-story stone pagoda (*Sokka-tap*), phantom bells echoing through mountain fogs, and protective spirits of ancient warrior-monks guarding the sacred Tripitaka Koreana printing woodblocks.

    Choijin Lama Temple

    Located in central Ulaanbaatar, the Choijin Lama Temple was constructed between 1904 and 1908 specifically for Luvsankhaidav, the State Oracle of Mongolia and brother of the 8th Bogd Khan. The temple complex survived the brutal Stalinist purges of 1937 by being converted into a state museum. Notorious for housing terrifying wrathful deity statues, authentic 19th-century Cham dance masks, and the physical secret ritual chambers of the State Oracle, night watchmen and staff report mysterious ritual drum beats, moving statues, and haunting apparitions in the Zankhang hall.

    Aryapala Temple and Terelj Meditation Caves

    Perched dramatically on a steep granite cliff face in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Aryapala Initiation and Meditation Center (Aryabal Khiid) and its adjacent ancient meditation caves form a sacred mountain retreat. Built in the shape of an elephant's head with 108 steep concrete steps leading to the main shrine, the site overlooks granite rock formations, ancient shamanic cairns (ovoos), and hidden cliff caves where lamas meditated in solitary retreat for centuries. Visitors, hikers, and meditating pilgrims report hearing ghostly whispering, encountering mysterious protective energies inside the caves, and witnessing glowing orbs floating around the cliff path at twilight.
