Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı)
Located beneath the bustling streets of Sultanahmet in central Istanbul, the Basilica Cistern—known in Turkish as 'Yerebatan Sarnıcı' or the Subterranean Palace—is a breathtaking 6th-century Byzantine water reservoir. Constructed in 532 AD under Emperor Justinian I, this vast subterranean hall features 336 marble columns rising out of dark waters, illuminated by atmospheric ambient lighting. Famous for its mysterious upside-down Medusa head pedestals and weeping column, the cistern is enshrouded in ancient myths of underworld guardians and subterranean phantoms.
