    Golubac Fortress

    GolubacSerbia14th century

Perched dramatically on sheer limestone cliffs at the entrance to the Iron Gates gorge along the Danube River, Golubac Fortress is one of Serbia's most spectacular medieval strongholds. Built in the early 14th century and fought over in more than 120 battles between the Serbian Despotate, the Kingdom of Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire, the fortress features nine imposing stone towers linked by fortified ramparts. Centuries of violent sieges, river blockades, and local legends—including the tragic story of a captive princess imprisoned in the highest tower—have endowed Golubac with persistent reports of phantom sightings, spectral lights, and disembodied voices echoing along the Danube.

    Kapetanovo Castle

    Stari LecSerbia1904

Kapetanovo Castle (Dvorac Kapetanovo) is a striking Neo-Gothic manor house located near the village of Stari Lec in the Banat plains of northern Serbia. Built in 1904 by Botka Béla, a wealthy Hungarian nobleman, the castle features tall crenellated towers, pointed arches, and decorative step gables reminiscent of medieval English castles. Following Botka's bankruptcy in 1938, his wife Emma committed suicide by climbing the castle tower and setting herself on fire. According to local folklore, her tragic death gave rise to a chilling legend: every St. George's Day, the phantom silhouette of a blond woman appears on the castle tower, accompanied by mysterious mechanical failures.
