Citadel of Salah Ed-Din
Hidden deep within the lush, pine-covered Coastal Mountain Range near Latakia, the Citadel of Salah Ed-Din, also known as Qal'at Salah al-Din or Saône Castle, is one of the most dramatically situated fortresses in the Middle East. Perched on a high mountain ridge between two deep ravines, the castle is famous for its astonishing twenty-eight-meter-deep moat hand-carved out of solid limestone. Long associated with Crusader battles and Saladin's legendary 1188 siege, the mountain fort is renowned in local folklore for phantom echoes, spectral knights, and eerie whispers in its rock-cut passages.
