Ebenezer Methodist Church & Burial Ground

    The ValleyAnguilla1830 (foundation 1817)

Standing proudly in central The Valley, Ebenezer Methodist Church is the oldest Methodist chapel in Anguilla and a cornerstone of the island's spiritual and social history. First established in 1817 by missionary John Hodge—a free man of color who converted hundreds of islanders—the original church was destroyed by a ferocious hurricane in 1824 before being rebuilt in 1830 using heavy stone walls and naval timber joinery. The adjacent historic burial ground contains the resting places of early missionaries, prominent island leaders, and generations of Anguillan families. Over the decades, parishioners and town residents have recounted eerie tales of phantom organ music sounding from the dark chapel at midnight, ethereal glowing lights among the headstones, and quiet apparitions of 19th-century preachers standing near the altar.
