La Recoleta Cemetery
La Recoleta Cemetery is a world-famous, 14-acre necropolis located in the elegant Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Established in 1822 as the city's first public cemetery, it features over 4,600 above-ground marble mausoleums and crypts showcasing Art Deco, Neo-Gothic, Baroque, and Neo-Classical architecture. Beyond housing presidents, military heroes, Nobel laureates, and Eva Perón, Recoleta is internationally renowned for haunting urban legends—most notably the tragic story of Rufina Cambaceres, the young woman buried alive in 1902, whose tearful spirit continues to wander the narrow stone avenues at twilight.
