    Plaza de España

    HagåtñaGuam1693–1736

The Plaza de España in Hagåtña was the executive seat of Spanish colonial government on Guam for over two centuries, from 1693 until the American acquisition in 1898. Serving as the residence of Spanish governors and later American naval commanders, the plaza was largely destroyed during the brutal American bombardment in the 1944 Battle of Guam. Today, surviving stone structures—including the Azotea, the Almacen kiosk, the Chocolate House, and ancient coral walls—are renowned as one of Guam's most haunted historic sites, where phantom Spanish soldiers, weeping specters, and disembodied footsteps are frequently encountered.
