Casa de Ferro
Casa de Ferro, or the Iron House, is an extraordinary prefabricated metal mansion imported to Maputo in 1892, designed by the famous French engineer Gustave Eiffel. Intended as the official residence for the Portuguese governor, the structure proved completely uninhabitable due to Mozambique's intense tropical heat, which turned the interior into a sweltering oven. Standing today as a unique architectural curiosity along Avenida Samora Machel, the metallic building is celebrated for its unusual history and local stories of phantom heat and metallic creaks.
