    Perched atop Coogan's Bluff in Washington Heights, the Morris-Jumel Mansion is the oldest surviving residential building in Manhattan. Constructed in 1765 as a summer villa for British military officer Roger Morris, this Palladian-style estate served as headquarters for General George Washington during the 18th-century Battle of Harlem Heights. Later acquired in 1810 by wealthy French wine merchant Stephen Jumel and his eccentric wife Eliza, the mansion was briefly home to former Vice President Aaron Burr following his infamous marriage to Eliza in 1833. Widely celebrated as Manhattan's most actively haunted home, the mansion is famous for reports of at least five lingering spirits, including the restless ghost of Eliza Jumel, Revolutionary War soldiers, and a former serving girl.
