Obock Colonial Ruins & Cemetery
Obock was the original capital of French Somaliland, established in 1862 after French representative Henri Lambert signed a treaty with local Afar sultans. Before the colonial administration shifted to Djibouti City in 1896, Obock served as a harsh naval coaling station where hundreds of French soldiers, administrators, and convict laborers succumbed to extreme heat, tropical fevers, and cholera. Today, the decaying Governor's Residence and the windswept Marine Cemetery on the coral shore stand as haunted monuments to fallen colonial pioneers and abandoned souls.
