Aapravasi Ghat
Aapravasi Ghat, located at Trou Fanfaron in Port Louis, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as the primary British immigration depot for indentured laborers between 1849 and 1923. Over half a million contracted workers, mainly from India, passed through these basalt stone gates to work on sugar plantations across the British Empire. Known historically as the 'Great Experiment', the site represents a crucial turning point in global labor history following the abolition of slavery. Today, visitors and security personnel report lingering emotional residual energy, phantom footfalls on the famous 16 basalt steps, and mysterious whispers echoing through the surviving hospital wards and immigration quarters.
