    Cahora Bassa Dam

    Cahora Bassa Dam is one of the largest hydroelectric engineering projects in Africa, spanning the steep Kebrabasa Gorge along the Zambezi River in Tete Province. Constructed between 1969 and 1979 amidst intense guerrilla warfare during the Mozambican War of Independence, the dam project claimed hundreds of lives due to dangerous construction conditions, industrial accidents, and landmine warfare. Today, the massive concrete arch and subterranean generator caverns are shrouded in local legends of river spirits and phantom workers.
