    Kijong-dong Propaganda Village

    KaesongDemocratic People's Republic of Korea1950s

Situated in the northern half of the Korean Demilitarized Zone near Panmunjom, Kijong-dong—officially known in North Korea as Peace Village (P'yŏnghwach'on)—is widely recognized internationally as a hollow 'Propaganda Village' or 'Ghost Village'. Constructed in the 1950s following the Korean War armistice to project modern rural luxury and economic prosperity across the border, high-powered telescopic observations reveal that the colorful multi-story apartment buildings are hollow concrete shells lacking interior floors, glass window panes, or permanent human inhabitants. Dominated by a massive 160-meter-tall flagpole flying a 270-kilogram DPRK flag, the settlement was historically infamous for blasting high-decibel patriotic broadcasts and opera music across the buffer zone 24 hours a day. The artificial, uninhabited nature of the village has given rise to widespread dark folklore regarding phantom silhouettes, automated lighting anomalies, and unsettling voice broadcasts.
