    The Jailhouse Inn

    YorkUnited States1719–present

Originally constructed in 1719 as the King's Gaol, the Jailhouse Inn in York, Maine, stands as one of the oldest surviving colonial penal structures in North America. Serving for over a century as a county jail holding accused witches, pirates, debtors, and violent criminals, the heavy stone and timber facility was later converted into a historic boutique inn. Today, guests and staff report intense supernatural phenomena, including disembodied screams echoing from the old cell blocks, cold spots in former solitary chambers, and apparitions of colonial prisoners.
