Kasbah of Le Kef
The Kasbah of Le Kef is a dramatic seventeenth-century hilltop citadel commanding the high rocky ridges of northwestern Tunisia near the Algerian border. Built by Ottoman military commanders over Roman and Byzantine foundations, this heavy stone fortress featured two distinct fortifying rings designed to withstand siege warfare, rebellions, and border conflicts. Modern visitors, night watchmen, and local residents describe disquieting feelings of being watched, phantom footsteps echoing in underground ammunition magazines, and ghost sentries seen standing guard along the high stone ramparts.
