    Lake Abbe Chimneys

Lake Abbe BasinDjiboutiPrehistoric / Ancient Era

Lake Abbe is a desolate salt lake straddling the Djibouti-Ethiopia border, famous for its otherworldly landscape of hundreds of natural limestone chimneys rising up to 50 meters into the sky. Venting sulfurous steam and boiling groundwater, these hollow stone towers create a surreal landscape often described as a lunar or apocalyptic wasteland. Deeply rooted Afar nomadic traditions hold that the steaming towers serve as chimneys for subterranean spirit worlds, where ancestral ghosts and desert Jinn congregate under the night sky.

    Gunnuhver Geothermal Area

    GrindavíkIceland18th century–present

Gunnuhver is a roaring geothermal hot spring complex on the southwestern tip of Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, famous for its mud pools, steaming fumaroles, and fierce ghost legend. Named after an 18th-century female specter named Guðrún Önundardóttir, or Gunna, the site is widely considered one of Iceland's most intense paranormal locations. According to centuries-old folklore, Gunna's malevolent spirit was bound to the boiling geothermal vents by a clever local priest, and her restless wrath continues to echo through the sulfurous steam.
