    Mailuu-Suu Soviet Mining Complex

    Mailuu-SuuKyrgyzstan1946–1968

Mailuu-Suu is a notorious secret Soviet uranium mining town nestled in a narrow river valley in Jalal-Abad Region, southwestern Kyrgyzstan. Established in 1946 under Stalin's secret nuclear weapons program, Mailuu-Suu produced nearly 10,000 metric tons of uranium ore that fueled the first Soviet atomic bomb (RDS-1) tested in 1949. When the mines closed in 1968, millions of cubic meters of radioactive tailings were left buried along unstable landslide slopes. Today, Mailuu-Suu is an eerie industrial ghost town surrounded by twenty-three radioactive waste dumps, abandoned mine adits, and decaying Stalinist apartments. Locals and visiting researchers report hearing disembodied human groans near collapsed mine shafts, phantom machinery clatter, and seeing mysterious green luminescence drifting across tailings mounds after dark.
