The Secretariat (Ministers' Building)
The Secretariat, officially known as the Ministers' Building, is a vast Victorian-colonial administrative palace occupying an entire 16-acre city block in downtown Yangon. Built between 1889 and 1905 as the headquarters of British Burma, it was the hallowed site where General Aung San—father of modern Myanmar—and eight cabinet ministers were tragically assassinated on July 19, 1947. Renowned as one of Southeast Asia's most hauntingly atmospheric historical landmarks, the building is steeped in tragic political history, ghosts of colonial officials, and lingering paranormal encounters.
