Palazzo Pubblico
The Palazzo Pubblico, situated on Piazza della Libertà, is the town hall and official seat of the main government institutions of the Republic of San Marino, including the Captains Regent and the Grand and General Council. Designed by Italian architect Francesco Azzurri and constructed between 1884 and 1894 on the foundations of the medieval Domus Magna Communis, the Neo-Gothic palace features a clock tower, crenellated battlements, and ornate Council chambers. Behind its grand state rooms and historic council halls lie tales of historic political debates, ancient rivalries, and reports of phantom statesmen seen standing at the balcony late at night.
