Quinta das Lágrimas
Quinta das Lágrimas (Estate of Tears) is a historic 12-hectare estate located in Coimbra, Portugal, famous across Portuguese culture as the tragic setting for the forbidden 14th-century romance between Prince Pedro (later King Pedro I) and the noblewoman Inês de Castro. In 1355, Inês was brutally assassinated on the grounds by order of King Afonso IV, Pedro's father, who feared her family's political influence. According to enduring Portuguese tradition and poetry, her blood stained the red rocks at the Fonte das Lágrimas (Fountain of Tears). Today, visitors and hotel guests frequently report seeing the weeping apparition of Inês wandering near the fountain, along with disembodied sighs, phantom footsteps in the gardens, and unexplained cold spots near the ancient red-hued water basin.
