Submerged Ruins of Lake Issyk-Kul
Lake Issyk-Kul is the second-largest alpine lake in the world, nestled in the northern Tian Shan mountains of eastern Kyrgyzstan. Renowned for its warm, slightly saline thermal waters that never freeze even in harsh alpine winters—giving it its Kyrgyz name 'Warm Lake'—Issyk-Kul hides a dark underwater secret. Beneath its deep turquoise surface lie the drowned ruins of several ancient Silk Road cities, Scythian settlements, and medieval monasteries submerged by sudden catastrophic water level rises over the past two millennia.
