Elder Ballou Cemetery (Cumberland Vampire Grave)
Tucked along the winding Elder Ballou Meeting House Road in Cumberland, Rhode Island, Elder Ballou Cemetery (Rhode Island Historic Cemetery Cumberland #5) is one of the oldest and most eerie rural burial grounds in New England. Established in the early 1700s by the prominent Ballou family, this historic hilltop graveyard contains crude slate and local Cumberlandite stone grave markers dating back over three centuries. Beyond its rich colonial heritage, the cemetery holds a sinister reputation in New England folklore as a focal point of the 18th- and 19th-century New England Vampire Panic, complete with legends of exhumed bodies, spectral apparitions, and local vampire lore.
