Shangani Historic Coral District
Shangani is one of the oldest quarter districts in Mogadishu, renowned for its ancient whitewashed coral-stone architecture, narrow labyrinthine alleyways, and historic merchant mansions overlooking the Indian Ocean. Dating back over a thousand years to the height of the Indian Ocean trade networks, Shangani suffered severe war damage during the 1990s. Today, its shadow-draped alleyways and abandoned coral ruins are famous for nocturnal sightings of phantom sea traders, glowing jinn lights, and whispering voices.
