Citadel of Acre (Akko Prison)
The Citadel of Acre, dominant over the ancient port city of Akko, is an imposing fortification constructed directly over massive 12th-century Crusader subterranean halls. Expanded by Ottoman rulers and later converted by British Mandate authorities into Palestine's primary high-security prison, the citadel saw dozens of executions and heroic prison breaks. Phantom footsteps, icy drafts in death-row gallows rooms, and ghostly whispers in the subterranean Knights' Halls make it one of Israel's most famous haunted strongholds.
