Harar Jugol
Harar Jugol is an ancient walled Islamic city located in eastern Ethiopia, regarded as the fourth holiest city in Islam. Enclosed by 16th-century stone ramparts pierced by five historic gates, the labyrinthine city contains 82 mosques and over 100 shrines crowded into narrow cobblestone alleyways. At night, wild hyenas enter the city walls through specialized portals to be hand-fed by local masters, giving rise to legends of djinn, shapeshifters, and phantom spirits.
