    Kisiljevo Vampire Village

    KisiljevoSerbia1725

Kisiljevo is a tranquil village in eastern Serbia famous for recording one of the earliest official, medically documented vampire panics in world history. In July 1725, following the death of local peasant Petar Blagojević, nine villagers died after claiming on their deathbeds that Blagojević visited them in the night and squeezed their throats. An imperial Austrian military officer and an army surgeon conducted a formal exhumation, observing an undecayed corpse with fresh blood at the mouth. This official report coined and exported the Serbian word 'vampire' into Western European consciousness.

    Medveđa Vampire Site

    MedveđaSerbia1731–1732

Medveđa, a quiet village on the West Morava River near Trstenik, is historical ground for the most famous official vampire epidemic in world history. In the winter of 1731–1732, Austrian imperial authorities conducted a medical investigation following seventeen mysterious deaths attributed to Arnold Paole (Arnaut Pavle), a Serbian hajduk who claimed to have been bitten by a vampire while stationed in Ottoman Greece. The resulting official medical report, titled 'Visum et Repertum' ('Seen and Discovered') and signed by five Austrian military surgeons, was published across Europe, sparking the 18th-century European 'Vampire Controversy' and directly shaping modern vampire literature.
