Holy Trinity Orthodox Church of Karakol

    KarakolKyrgyzstan1895

The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church is a magnificent 19th-century wooden cathedral located in Karakol, near the eastern tip of Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan. Constructed entirely from Tien Shan mountain cedar logs without nails in 1895, this architectural masterpiece replaced an earlier stone church destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1889. The church endured a turbulent history during the Soviet era, when Bolshevik authorities executed local clergy, confiscated sacred icons, and converted the sanctuary into a dance hall, coal storehouse, and sports center. Returned to the Orthodox Church in 1991, the cathedral is famous for housing the venerated Icon of the Mother of God of Tikhvin and persistent reports of disembodied Orthodox choral singing echoing through locked doors, phantom footsteps in the wooden bell tower, and shadow figures in dark robes moving past the altar.
