    Ottawa Jail Hostel

    OttawaCanada1862

Located in the heart of downtown Ottawa, the Ottawa Jail Hostel (formerly the Carleton County Gaol) is widely regarded as one of the most intensely haunted buildings in North America. Opened in 1862, this notorious Victorian prison operated for over a century under brutal conditions—featuring unheated stone cells, severe overcrowding, and public executions on its gallows. Since its closure in 1972 and conversion into a budget hostel, guests staying in restored cell blocks and tour visitors regularly experience intense paranormal phenomena. The most prominent spirit is Patrick J. Whelan, who was hanged on the prison gallows in 1869 for the assassination of Canadian founding father Thomas D'Arcy McGee.
