    The Salang Tunnel, located at an astounding altitude of 3,878 meters (12,723 feet) in the Hindu Kush mountains, is a critical 2.7-kilometer highway tunnel connecting northern Afghanistan to Kabul. Built by Soviet engineers in 1964, the high-altitude tunnel is infamous as the site of one of the deadliest tunnel disasters in human history. On November 3, 1982, during the Soviet-Afghan War, a massive explosion and subsequent fire involving a Soviet military fuel convoy trapped thousands of soldiers and civilians inside the narrow, unventilated concrete tube, killing an estimated 1,000 to 2,000 people through carbon monoxide poisoning and asphyxiation. Truck drivers, highway patrol officers, and mountain travelers report frightening supernatural occurrences inside the dark tunnel, including ghostly figures wandering along narrow emergency walkways, disembodied cries for air echoing through exhaust vents, sudden engine stalls, and phantom military trucks vanishing into dark rock walls.
