    Ribat of Monastir

    MonastirTunisia796 AD

The Ribat of Monastir is the oldest and most prominent Islamic coastal fortress in North Africa. Founded in 796 AD by the Abbasid governor Harthama ibn A'yan, this massive stone citadel served as both a defensive military post against Christian naval raids and a spiritual retreat for warrior-monks known as Murabitun. Modern visitors and night guards report seeing ghostly guardians along the upper battlements, hearing mysterious nighttime footsteps inside the watchtower, and feeling icy sea drafts in dark prayer halls.

    Ribat of Sousse

    SousseTunisia821 AD

The Ribat of Sousse is a remarkably intact ninth-century Islamic coastal fortress standing at the entrance to the UNESCO World Heritage Medina of Sousse. Constructed in 821 AD by Aghlabid Emir Ziyadat Allah I, this square stone citadel functioned as a combined military outpost and monastery for devout Muslim warrior-monks who defended the North African coast against Byzantine naval raids. Visitors and night caretakers report hearing phantom vigil prayers inside the upper mosque hall, seeing shadowy guards on the battlements, and feeling cold drafts inside the high watchtower.
