Seili Island
Seili Island (Själö), located in the breathtaking Archipelago Sea near Nauvo, carries one of Finland’s most tragic medical histories. Established by royal decree of King Gustav II Adolf in 1619 as a isolated leper colony and later converted into Finland’s premier asylum for incurable women, the island’s centuries of forced isolation and exile have given rise to ghost legends of the White Lady of Seili and phantom cries echoing across foggy sea waters.
