    Grmožur Fortress

    GodinjeMontenegro1843

Grmožur Fortress, situated on a barren stone islet in the southwestern waters of Lake Skadar, is widely known as the 'Alcatraz of Montenegro.' Built by the Ottoman Empire in 1843 and captured by Montenegrin forces in 1878, King Nikola I converted the isolated fortification into a penal colony for non-swimmers, political opponents, and dangerous felons. Surrounded by murky lake waters and inhabited by thousands of nesting birds and snakes, the ruined island fortress has inspired haunting tales of drowned convicts, spectral guards, phantom light displays, and eerie midnight cries echoing across the lake.

    Mamula Fortress

    Herceg NoviMontenegro1853

Mamula Fortress, situated on the uninhabited islet of Lastavica at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, is one of Montenegro's most notorious haunted sites. Originally constructed in 1853 by Austro-Hungarian General Lazar Mamula to guard against naval incursions, the circular stone fort was converted into a brutal concentration camp by Benito Mussolini's Italian fascist forces during World War II. Over two thousand prisoners were incarcerated within its damp, subterranean cells, enduring torture, starvation, and execution. Today, visitors and former caretakers report lingering disembodied screams, unnatural cold spots, phantom footsteps echoing down stone corridors, and fleeting apparitions of wartime captives.
