Lake Bosumtwi
Lake Bosumtwi (also spelled Bosomtwe) is Ghana's only natural lake, formed approximately one million years ago by a meteorite impact. Situated 30 kilometers southeast of Kumasi, the crater lake is revered as deeply sacred by the Ashanti people, who believe it is the resting place of the dead. According to traditional belief, the soul of every deceased person comes to Lake Bosumtwi to bid farewell to the god Twi before ascending to the spirit world. Famed for its traditional wooden pad-boats (padua), mysterious water explosions, and spiritual apparitions, Lake Bosumtwi is one of West Africa's most mystical natural sites.
