Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu, straddling the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of Africa's Great Lakes and one of only three known exploding lakes in the world. Deep beneath its peaceful turquoise surface lie vast reserves of dissolved carbon dioxide and methane gas. Beyond its natural beauty and modern resort towns like Gisenyi (Rubavu), Lake Kivu holds a complex history marked by wartime tragedies, ancient aquatic legends, and persistent reports of phantom canoes gliding across its misty waters at dusk.
