Lake Natron
Lake Natron is an eerie, highly alkaline salt lake situated in the Gregory Rift Valley of northern Tanzania, near the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai. Famed for its blood-red waters caused by salt-loving cyanobacteria and extreme pH levels reaching up to 10.5, the caustic waters calcify wildlife that perishes in its chemical depths. Revered by local Maasai pastoralists as the domain of the volcano god Lengai, the surreal landscape is shrouded in tales of phantom warnings and calcified spirits.
