The National Library of India, housed within the magnificent 30-acre Belvedere Estate in Kolkata's Alipore district, is the largest library in the country by volume. Originally built in the 1760s for Mir Jafar and later serving as the official residence of Warren Hastings and colonial Lieutenant Governors of Bengal, this heritage complex holds over 2.2 million books. Alongside its staggering literary heritage, Belvedere House carries an iconic ghost story reputation involving the spectral presence of Lady Metcalfe, phantom footsteps of Warren Hastings, and a mysterious 1,000-square-foot sealed secret room discovered by archaeologists in 2010.
