    Fort Delaware

    NarrowsburgUnited States1754

Fort Delaware, situated along scenic Route 97 in the hamlet of Narrowsburg, New York, is an authentic living history museum recreating a 1754 frontier stockade settlement in the Upper Delaware River Valley. Originally established by the Connecticut Delaware Company during the French and Indian War, the outpost provided fortified protection for early colonial pioneers entering the wilderness of Cushetunk. Today, operated by Sullivan County and The Delaware Company, the reconstructed log fort features blockhouses, timber palisades, blacksmith shops, and herb gardens. Known locally for its rich frontier folklore, staff re-enactors and visitors frequently report unexplained sights and sounds, including phantom gunshots, spectral colonial figures, and disembodied voices lingering around the log stockade.

    AvellaUnited StatesPrehistoric (19,000 BP)

Meadowcroft Rockshelter, located near Avella in Washington County, Pennsylvania, is a world-renowned National Historic Landmark recognized as the oldest verified site of human habitation in North America. Formed by a massive sandstone overhang overlooking Cross Creek, the rock shelter provided refuge for prehistoric hunter-gatherer bands beginning over 19,000 years ago. Operated as a division of the Heinz History Center, the site encompasses the ancient excavation pit alongside a recreated 16th-century Monongahela Indian Village and a 19th-century rural hamlet. Steeped in thousands of years of human presence, staff and visitors report eerie spiritual sensations, disembodied whispers, flickering lights, and lingering specters of ancient occupants.
