Khoja Mashhad Mausoleum Complex
The Khoja Mashhad Mausoleum Complex is an extraordinary 9th–11th century Islamic architectural masterpiece located in the village of Sayyod, Shaartuz District, in southern Tajikistan's Khatlon Region. Consisting of two massive twin mud-brick domed mausoleums connected by a central vaulted courtyard and madrasa hall, Khoja Mashhad is one of the oldest surviving brick madrasa-mausoleums in the entire Islamic world. The site is named after Khoja Mashhad, a revered 9th-century Sufi scholar, mystic, and missionary who brought Islamic learning to the upper Amu Darya region. Renowned as a holy pilgrimage site ('mazar'), Khoja Mashhad is famous throughout Tajikistan for unexplained spiritual phenomena, including disembodied Quranic recitations echoing under the twin domes at dawn, phantom green light pillars appearing over the tombs, and miraculous healing energies reported by pilgrims.
