Qal'at Ja'bar
Perched atop a dramatic hilltop island surrounded by the deep blue waters of Lake Assad on the Euphrates River, Qal'at Ja'bar is one of Syria's most striking medieval castles. Originally built on a high cliff overlooking the Euphrates valley, the castle became an island fortress in 1974 when the creation of the Tabqah Dam flooded the surrounding basin. Steeped in medieval history, military sieges, and local Euphrates lore, the isolated castle is famous for ghost sightings of ancient garrisons, phantom lanterns, and eerie whispers in its ruined brick towers.
