Gawkadal Bridge
Crossing the turbulent waters of the Jhelum River canal system in central Srinagar, Gawkadal Bridge is internationally known as the tragic site of the January 21, 1990 massacre. During a period of widespread political unrest, paramilitary forces opened fire on a large crowd of unarmed Kashmiri protesters on the bridge, resulting in dozens of deaths by gunshot wounds and drowning. Over the decades, the bridge has accumulated a heavy, haunting reputation, with locals and passersby describing ghostly wails, phantom footprints, and lingering atmospheric sorrow after dark.
