Shalban Vihara & Mainamati

Shalban Vihara, situated on the Mainamati ridge in Cumilla, is one of the most famous 8th-century Buddhist archaeological sites in South Asia. Built during the reign of King Bhava Deva of the Deva Dynasty, the monastery complex housed hundreds of Buddhist monks before falling into decay and forest overgrowth. Surrounding the ancient ruins are World War II military remnants and the nearby Mainamati War Cemetery. Local villagers and night watchmen tell stories of low Buddhist chanting echoing from empty brick monk cells at midnight, phantom lights moving through the shal forest, and spectral soldiers patrolling the ridge.
