Smuggler's Notch
Carved through the Green Mountains between Mount Mansfield and Sterling Mountain, Smuggler's Notch is a narrow, dramatic mountain pass steeped in over two centuries of illicit trade and dark mountain folklore. Known historically as a haven for 19th-century smugglers, runaway slaves, and Prohibition bootleggers, the steep 1,000-foot granite cliffs and cavernous boulder fields are famous for strange phantom voices, disembodied footsteps, and mysterious lights echoing down the pass.
