Fortress of Maputo
The Fortress of Maputo, also known as the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, is a iconic quadrangular stone fort in downtown Maputo overlooking Maputo Bay. Originally constructed in the mid-19th century to defend Portuguese colonial interests, it served as a military command post and prison where legendary resistance leader Ngungunhane was held following his capture in 1895. Today, the historic military museum is renowned for its colonial armaments, historical relics, and persistent reports of phantom soldiers.
