Sudd Wetland Ghost Swamps & Lost Channels
The Sudd Wetland in central South Sudan is one of the world's largest freshwater swamps, spanning over 50,000 square kilometers along the White Nile. Historically dreaded by Roman legions, 19th-century explorers, and river traders as an impenetrable labyrinth of floating papyrus vegetation, sunken channels, and sudden floods, the vast marshland is rich in lore regarding phantom riverboats, lost expeditions, and protective water spirits (*jak*).
